The island is located on the 28th parallel, some 120 kilometres away from the African coast, has an unexpectedly benign climate thanks to favourable ocean currents and fresh Trade winds. These factors together with the high volcanic mountains which are found in the interior of Gran Canaria, divide the island into very dissimilar areas of sharp contrasting landscapes which have given the island the nickname of "miniature continent".
Climbing from the warm, desert coastal areas of the south through the humid and green lower northern slopes to the high mountain peaks is really like travelling through several different countries in a short distance. In a single day one can drive through very different climatic zones, while the more daring can take advantage of the extensive network of paths to get to know this surprising island from its " inside".
