The estate reportedly teamed up with a veteran Broadway producer to help produce the musical

Houston’s estate is currently in production for the first authorized biopic about the singer’s life and career. The film, titled after her 1997 single “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” stars Naomi Ackie as Houston and features Stanley Tucci and Tamara Tunie. After the biopic, a Broadway musical adaptation should be in the works. The biopic is slated for release this year.

Houston’s sister-in-law Pat Houston, who is the executor of her estate, confirmed the news in an interview with Variety. In order to bring the musical to life, the estate has partnered with Harry Potter and the Cursed Child producer Sonia Friedman. It’s part of a larger vision to expand its domain to new heights.

“It was time to rebuild Whitney’s business and Primary Wave, with its arsenal of industry professionals, was the right fit, a team built to take Whitney’s legacy to the next level,” Pat told the publication. Pat led Houston for a decade, until Houston’s death in 2012.

According to an official description of the film, the biopic is a “joyful, emotional and heartbreaking celebration of the life and music of the greatest pop R&B singer of all time, charting her journey from obscurity to musical stardom.” While being very candid about the price that super-stardom demanded, it will be both the rich and complex epic of finding the perfect marriage between song, singer and audience, and at the same time the story moving story of a simple Jersey girl trying to find her way home.

Several other projects are in preparation

Along with the biopic and the musical, the estate is gearing up for a big campaign to coincide with what would have been Houston’s 60th birthday in 2023. A Las Vegas tribute show is also planned. Additionally, two full albums are set to be released in 2023, along with an accompanying soundtrack for the biopic this year.

“Clive [Davis] will indeed be involved in the soundtrack,” says Larry, Founder and CEO of Primary Wave. Primary Wave works with the Houston Estate to execute such plans. “He is currently not involved with the Broadway show or the Vegas concept, but he is always welcome to participate in anything we do involving Whitney and her music. He was an essential partner in the film project.
