Boating Safety Tips This Holiday Weekend

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – As Memorial Day weekend approaches, lots of people are spending time on the water, but now is the time to play it safe.

The Ingham County Marine Patrol says it expects a lot more people to be on the water this weekend and plans to inspect a lot of boats to make sure people are prepared.

Here are some tips they shared with us:

Make sure you have all the required safety equipment

Check your boat before going out in the water

Don’t drive under the influence

Let someone who does not sail with you know all the details of your trip

stay alert

“At the end of the day, you have to be careful when you’re in a boat, you have to know where everyone else is. The more traffic the more important it is, ”said Deputy Andy Duling, Ingham County Marine Patrol. “It’s a fun weekend and boating is really fun as long as everyone is doing it responsibly.”

Last year, 181 boating accidents resulted in serious injuries and even death. So make sure you play it safe this weekend. You can find more advice on the Michigan Department of Natural Resources website.
