Speaking in a Instagram video, she said, “I was determined to have a cat that day.

“I called my best friend and she and I and my roommate went to three or four shelters until we could find a cat, we had finally gone to this local shelter and that would be our last.

“We saw the cats and my best friend and I – it was a full kennel – but Peanut was the one in the middle in his own little crate. I saw him and thought “I need him”.

“All my childhood I wanted to adopt a special needs cat, help him and give him the life he deserves and he was the last one in need of adoption and I couldn’t leave him.”

Sydney is unsure of the reason for the animal’s facial condition, but says the shelter predicted either a birth defect or an anomaly as a result of abuse when Peanut was a kitten.

She explained, “When we adopted him, the shelter said it was either a birth defect or a defect of that sort of thing.

“He could have been mistreated when he was younger. He came from a hoarding situation with about eight cats in the house and the owner was deceased. So he had to be abandoned at the shelter and that’s what he looks like, they said he was in perfect health.

Peanut’s facial defect doesn’t have a major impact on his health, and aside from a few “few issues” when Sydney first adopted him, he’s settled into his new home.

She said: “The vet said he was healthy, the shape of the head doesn’t affect him much.

“They think the lack of hearing and eyes is a result of the shape of the head, but he’s pretty healthy otherwise.

“He had a few issues when we first had him, we took care of it and he’s doing really well.”

Peanut has adapted well to his new surroundings, and Sydney says he gets along well with her other cat Apollo, despite the couple’s rough start.
