Cinderella’s musical beginnings reimagined in Wellington

The Wellington Footlights Society is proud to present the New Zealand premiere of Ashes of Soho, a charming and hilarious modern musical adaptation of the Cinderella story. Originally launched outside the West End in 2012, Ashes of Soho
is a new urban musical fable filled with gritty humor and infectious melodies that will thrill audiences long after the clock strikes midnight.

Under the neon lights of London’s Soho district, Robbie barely manages to make ends meet working in his mother’s laundromat, under constant harassment from his abrasive stepsisters. When he becomes romantically tangled with indentured mayoral candidate James Prince, their worlds are turned upside down as they battle for true love in this fabulous take on the classic fairy tale.

“This show is so much fun,” says returning director Karen Anslow (Heathers: The Musical, Flatline with two sugars). “With romance, great music and dirty jokes, people will walk away with big smiles on their faces.”

Footlights supports InsideOUT for its production of Ashes of Soho, building on its history of giving back to the community, and will donate 10% of all ticket revenue to the Rainbow Organization (LGTBQ+). Having raised funds for Mary Potter Hospice, Youthline and School’s Out in previous productions, InsideOUT naturally fit the themes of Ashes of Soho.

“It’s really important to us to give back to the communities that have supported and helped so many of us through difficult times,” said Footlights co-founder Michael Stebbings, who plays mayoral candidate James Prince. “The acceptance of the history of
Ashes of Soho is thanks to the work of groups like InsideOUT and we’re proud to use our show to recognize and thank them for all they do.”

Ashes of Soho takes place from January 27 to February 5 in Te Auaha, Wellington. Music by George Stiles. Lyrics by Anthony Drewe. Book by Anthony Drewe and Elliot Davies. Tickets available at
