Michael Jackson Musical ‘MJ’ Cancels Broadway Shows Until After Christmas – Deadline

In what could be the toughest of Covid Broadway cancellations, MJ, Michael Jackson’s new musical, won’t return to Broadway’s Neil Simon Theater until Monday, December 27, an announcement that cancels the show’s opportunity for the lucrative box office before Christmas and Christmas Day.

In a tweeted statement, the producers said: “Due to several positive COVID test results at the company, and out of caution, ‘MJ’ is canceling all performances until December 26. Previews will resume on Monday, December 27.

the MJ The announcement is the most ambitious of the recent surge in Covid cancellations, which this week has tended to one or two immediate performances followed by night-by-night decisions on further cancellations.

MJ ‘s The 10-day shutdown is more in line with last month’s temporary shutdown of Chicken & Biscuits, the Douglas Lyons comedy in Circle in the Square which went on hiatus from November 9-19 due to groundbreaking cases of Covid. While box office figures for individual shows aren’t available from the Broadway League this season, Chicken & Biscuits would have been struggling at the box office even before the cancellations, which is not the case with MJ. The musical Michael Jackson, featuring a book by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage, some 20 hits from Jackson and a star performance by newcomer Myles Frost, has been sold out since the previews began on the 6th December. The musical is directed and choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon.
