The skies are filled with bright, shining stars, as is the stage at the Musical Theater Heritage located at the Crown Center. The hilarious world premiere of PREJUDICE AND PRIDE runs until July 24, then heads to Edinburgh, Scotland in August. Sam Writes and Nicholas Collett Production bring this genre-changing American folk musical to life with a comedy style suitable for a wider audience.

PREJUDICE AND PRIDE, based on the Jane Austen classic, is the winner of the 2022 Musical Theater Heritage Artist Residency Award. Through the Artist Residency program, MTH provides free theatrical space, materials and resources to winners with the aim of stimulating local creations. 100% of ticket revenue goes to the residency award winners.

Sam Wright and Nicholas Collett wrote the book, with music, lyrics and musical direction by Sam Wright. Collett directs this outrageous tale of love, rejection, love, rejection and yes love. Couple that with jail time with conjugal visits, upbeat folk music and laugh-out-loud dialogue and you have the makings of a very entertaining evening.

Sam Wright has a fabulous voice and uses it and his banjo to bring Bennett to lifeReview: PREJUDICE AND PRIDE OPENS IN KANSAS CITY at Musical Theater Heritage Born a long time ago. Bennett meets Darcy Fitzwilliams, wonderfully played by Bridget Casad, and immediately forms a negative opinion of her. He later rejects her but is so taken with a letter she sends him that he begins to doubt her decision.

Darcy came to town with her equally wealthy New York friend, Carly Bing, who becomes the catalyst for Bennett’s original impression. Stefanie Stevens is gorgeous as Darcy and Victoria “Wick” Hamm, the woman who first made Bennett fall in love with her and then ran away with her baby brother Lyle. In addition to good acting and a great voice, Steven provides the choreography for the show.

The cast is made up of many of Kansas City’s most talented performers. Tim Ahlenius, Margaret Shelby, PT Mahoney, Christian Thomas Owen, Chris Amone, the musical style of Gullywasher and the incomparable Katie Gilchrist. I would be prone to carpal tunnel if I tried to write all the accolades this cast deserves. The best way to discover their immense talent would be to buy tickets for one of the remaining shows.

On July 8, the musical soundtrack of PREJUDICE AND PRIDE featuring Sam Wright and the Bard Owls became available at and at all shows. To purchase tickets online, go to
