Relix will take over from the recent renaissance Toulouse Theater during New Orleans Jazz Fest “daze between” weekends for a series of illuminating musical conversations and performances featuring a host of local luminaries.
The place is an interesting slice of New Orleans history in itself. Originally opened at 615 Toulouse Street in the French Quarter in 1961, the club remained in operation as the Théâtre de Toulouse for several decades. A change of ownership in 1999 renamed the venue as the Club Shim Sham before it is bought again and doubled One-Eyed Jacks in 2002.
When One Eyed Jacks did not reopen after closing due to COVID-19 in 2020, a group of New Orleans residents, including Ben Jaffethe creative director of Preservation Room Jazz Band, bought and renovated the club. It reopened in 2021 under its original name, Toulouse Théâtre. It should be noted that One Eyed Jacks has also finally reopened in a new location.
The Relix Musical Conversations program will begin on Monday, May 2 with a discussion moderated by “The Queen of Rare Groove” herself, revered WWOZ programmer DJ soulmate featuring the author of the bounce music Greater Freedia as well as Tank and the Bangas‘ Tarriona’s “Tank” Ball and Joshua Johnson.
