T20 tips can add extra to the bowling test: Hazlewood

The Australian middle order holds the nerve after the melons burst

The multi-format Australian stars adopted a remarkably tight turnaround from Ashes, with Josh Hazlewood making Gabba’s opener his first red ball game in nearly eight months.

Hazlewood and his Test Quick colleagues Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc will have little time to rest and reset for the Vodafone Ashes Test series of five against England, especially if they progress deep into the T20 World Cup.

The World Cup final takes place on November 15 (1 a.m. AEDT), while the Ashes begin in Brisbane on December 8.

Cricket Australia (CA) has yet to announce warm-up matches for both sides involved in the centerpiece series, with their plans to be guided by what is allowed under the Queensland quarantine concessions.

Australia have hosted an intra-squad selection shootout in England ahead of their retention of the ballot box in 2019, and there could be a repeat in South East Queensland.

Tim Paine’s side haven’t played a test since losing to India at Gabba in January, while Hazlewood hasn’t played a first-class match since the Marsh Sheffield Shield final in April.

But Hazlewood, who helped secure a victory over South Africa in the T20 World Cup opener in Australia, said a return to red ball mode in training would be viable.

“I don’t feel like I need a game of any kind,” he said from the United Arab Emirates.

“It’s more the kilometers in the legs.

“One or two big days of training, where we could play 14 or 16 overs in one day with a little fielding.

“If we get this under our belts, then I’m fine.”

Sydney-based spinner Nathan Lyon is set to start his Shield season this week and then join the World Cup squad when they arrive on the Gold Coast, bringing together Australia’s premier test attack.

England will have a plethora of players on deck, with their “A” squad following a 17-man Ashes squad.

Hazlewood has insisted the T20 World Cup could help improve his red ball bowling.

“In all formats I tend to bowling the same, except obviously the back of the T20s,” he said.

“There are definitely times in test matches where your T20 bowling comes into play.

Bizarre layoff crowns ideal Australian start

“The more you play T20, the more confident you will be in making these changes and putting them into practice.

“The fifth day and the wicket is still good, you have to use your own tricks.”

Ben Stokes’ six-charge rampage at Headingley, where the all-rounder finished 135 points after hitting a 359 goal, is one example.

“There are some things that I thought about trying again if I was in this situation,” Hazlewood said.

The right gunsmith echoed Lyon’s sentiment regarding Stokes, who was left out of the England tour as he recovered from a finger injury and focused on his sanity.

There is plenty of speculation that Stokes could be a late addition to the England squad.

“You want their best team here. I’m happy if he comes out,” Hazlewood said.
