Indiana area school superintendent Michael Vuckovich published a lengthy letter detailing the district’s summer camp program for elementary school students, now called “Accelerator Camps”. ‘summer”.

More than 400 students were enrolled in the free camps, with the district paying them out of federal funds.

Camps will run Monday through Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Indiana Junior High School, with breakfast, lunch, and transportation provided and academic sessions focused on math and English, and games led by the YMCA of Indiana County. .

From now on, face covers will be required and each student will receive a face shield.

Vuckovich’s letter, provided on the district’s website and below, covers a variety of topics, such as the subject, arrival and termination procedures, and medical and health advice. He optimistically predicts sunny weather and advises parents to apply sunscreen to their children before they leave for camp.

The summer camps for kindergarten to grade 5 students will take place in two sessions, on June 7e through the 24e and July 26e until August 12e.

Dear Families:

Thank you very much for your commitment to registering your child (ren) for the Indiana Area School District Summer Accelerator Camps! We are happy to announce that we have over 400 students enrolled in the summer program and we can’t wait to get started! As you may or may not know, this camp, thanks to the vision and leadership of the IASD Board of Directors, is available free to our families. We are happy to invest the federal funds we have received exactly where they are needed – in our students.

As we quickly approach the start of our summer camp, we wanted to provide you with timely information about the camp itself. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s school (s). Here are some details to get you started:


  • from Monday to Thursday
  • Location – Indiana Area Junior High School
    • The camp will be held at the Indiana area high school due to the central location of the building as well as the ability for us to prepare (clean up) the other schools for the fall.
  • Breakfast, lunch, and transportation will all be provided – free!
  • Academic sessions will be led by professional staff and will use evidence-based curricula.
  • Areas of interest will be Mathematics and the Arts of the English Language
  • Games and activities will be led by the YMCA of Indiana County.

Face cover

  • At this point, face coverings are still needed. We will provide each student with a face shield for their use during summer camp. Please provide your child with a face mask for the first day of camp.
  • We are eagerly monitoring the current situation to see if masks will still be needed in schools, as 70% of Pennsylvania citizens have received the vaccine. Currently, the governor’s orders are still in effect for unvaccinated staff and students to wear masks. It is not our decision and we must comply with the expectations expressed by the state. We will be sure to communicate accordingly if and when mask expectations change.


The timetables for the individual buses were sent today (May 28) to families. The bus timetable postcard identifies the pick-up location / time as well as the return location / time. If you would like to drop off your child alone, please drop them off at the gymnasium gates on Shyrock Avenue at 8:30 am or shortly before. If you plan to transport your child, please fill out a simple google form indicating so. We respectfully ask parents to complete this form before the close of business on June 2, 2021. Arrival in the morning

  • Students will arrive and report directly to the gymnasium. Upon arrival, YMCA staff, supervised by Ms. Jack and Ms. Kent, will enroll / register students by grade level and then dispatch them to their assigned seating positions. The zones assigned to students will be in the name of their teacher.
  • Teachers will come to the gymnasium every morning at 8:30 a.m. to pick up their students and accompany them to class.
  • Teachers will ask students to have a packed breakfast every morning when they leave the gymnasium.


  • Students who board the bus will be escorted to their bus by their teachers.
  • Parents who wish to pick up their child (ren) will need to visit the Jr. High Gymnasium to sign their child each day. Please use the same doors that your child uses in the morning upon arrival. I recognize that this wait is kind of a downside, but it’s an additional safety measure that we would like to implement.

Daily schedules

  • Ms. Kent and Ms. Jack will serve as camp leaders for the duration of the program. They will assist staff and students in the day-to-day management and leadership of the camp. This includes supervision of arrival / dismissal, supervision of lunch and supervision of activities.
  • Elementary principals will also be on hand to provide additional supervision and support.
  • Please provide your child with a refillable water bottle to use every day. The district has water filling stations throughout the building for use by students. Student water bottles should be clearly labeled with the student’s name.

Educational programming

The goal of the summer program is to reduce the academic impact of the pandemic on the academic performance of students. Pandemic or not, students can learn during the summer and have fun doing it! The educational program includes instruction in English and mathematics focused on the specific areas of interest of the students.

In addition to receiving targeted literacy instruction, graduate students supervised by an on-site faculty member from the IUP Communications Department will provide support to students who display phonemic awareness and phonetics needs in the classroom. Fun thursdays

We want to recognize the hard work of our students during summer camp by hosting fun Thursday events with activities such as kickball tournament, bowling, swimming, to name a few. More information will follow

Medical / Health services / Sunscreen

In October 2018, the Pennsylvania school code was amended to include a section on sun protection measures for students. Article 1414.10 states that a school entity must allow the application of sunscreen during school hours, during a school-sponsored activity or under the supervision of school staff. Review the complete legislation, which is available on the Pennsylvania General Assembly website:

Parents / guardians may choose to provide their child with aerosol-free topical sunscreen if it is approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration, but they must complete and submit the parent authorization form (below) for their child to apply sunscreen during school hours, at a school sponsored activity or under the supervision of school staff.

We anticipate many beautiful sunny days during our summer program. We will have a plethora of outdoor activities for our students to participate in during camp. Therefore, you may want to protect your child from the sun. Unfortunately, by law, school staff are not allowed to provide or apply sunscreen. As such, we ask families to do the following:

  1. Apply sunscreen to your child before they arrive at summer camp.
  2. If you are concerned about the need to apply additional sunscreen, provide your child with topical aerosol-free sunscreen and he / she can apply it as he / she sees fit (with parental permission only). For example, children may swim on some days and go out for hikes and activities on other days. They can reapply the sunscreen as they see fit based on their own comfort as well as outside temperatures.

If parents / guardians have additional questions or medical concerns, there will be an LPN on site with a certified school nurse on call daily. Please administer all planned medications at home.
