Say cheese! Grammy-winning duo Barlow and Bear will showcase their next project on TikTok, featuring Dolly Parton and others, partnering with Taco Bell to celebrate the fast-food chain’s famous Mexican pizza. Mexican Pizza: The Musical will premiere May 26 at 8 p.m. ET on TikTok, according to Today.
Joining Parton in the cast are Doja Cat and Victor Kunda, all three of whom are former proponents of introducing Mexican pizza to Taco Bell, whose battle serves as inspiration for the show’s plot. For the uninitiated, the dish looks like a quesadilla with beef and beans sandwiched between two tortillas with various customizable fillings.
The project is the latest attempt by TikTok, which is carving out a niche for music presentations on social media. The viral giant commissioned Daniel Mertzlufft For you Paige, which was performed from a theater in New York and broadcast live in April. The cast included Roman Banks, Sri Ramesh, James Henry, Krystina Alabado and JJ Niemann, along with reality TV mogul Andy Cohen.
This isn’t the first time Barlow and Bear have worked on a musical, either. Their Bridgerton’s Unofficial Musical won the 2022 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album earlier this year. After winning, the pair encouraged the up-and-coming designers to pursue their dream, a theme that surely runs through this new work on getting a popular food product into the hands of customers.
Meanwhile, Parton is well known for her involvement in the musical adaptation of 9 to 5, which premiered on Broadway in 2009 and earned a Tony nomination for Best Original Score. The show starred Stephanie J. Block, Allison Janey and Megan Hilty at the time of opening. Despite a short run on the Great Bright Way, the musical found longevity in the UK, both in the West End and on tour.
