THE SPONGEBOB MUSICAL is coming to the MCT in April

What started as a hugely popular cartoon on Nickelodeon (seen in over 170 countries) has become a full-fledged Broadway musical that in 2018 received 12 Tony Award nominations and the Drama Desk Award for Best musical comedy ! The final entry in Missoula Community Theater’s 2021-2022 pay-per-view season is a story of hope, joy, and overcoming adversity as we work together to save our world. In this case, the world is under the sea and the most unusual hero is a sea sponge…known simply as SpongeBob SquarePants.

Bikini Bottom is an underwater town full of colorful, cheerful characters and their yellow sea sponge friend, SpongeBob SquarePants. Life goes on wonderfully until Mount Humongous, a local volcano, threatens to erupt within 48 hours. Knowing that this would end their happy existence, the other residents of Bikini Bottom turn to SpongeBob, hoping that his optimism and courage will save the day! The show’s musical score is filled with original songs from Sara Bareilles, steven tyler, john legend, Cyndi Lauper, Plain white t-shirts and many other talented artists, for whom MCT provides a live orchestra.

Heather Adams is the show director, James Rio is the musical director and Paisley Thornton is the choreographer. Adams experiences SpongeBob SquarePants for the first time, saying “I didn’t know the cartoon or the musical before diving into this project, but now I’m obsessed! The music and script are smart, and the message of kindness, love and inclusiveness make this a touching and heartfelt show in unexpected ways. But hold on to your seats! Expect the unexpected with the wild antics in Bikini Bottom. will be off the hook and the cast is out of this world. There will be something for everyone and it’s a party we all have to experience!”

Performances are scheduled for April 29-May 1, May 6-8, and May 12-15, 2022, at the MCT Center for the Performing Arts.
