If you have a teenager who likes to sing Broadway hits and act out scenes, two dancers from Tri-City can provide an unforgettable experience for them.

This summer Nicol Spinola and Nicole Stevens, well-known choreographers and teachers from the Lindbjerg Academy of the Performing Arts and the Tri-City Dance Center in Coquitlam, will launch their Overnight Musical Theater Camp for Teens.

Called camp tailthe six-night getaway – July 17-23 – takes place at TELUS Wilderness Point on the Sunshine Coast, north of Sechelt.

Spinola and Stevens will lead the teaching while guest artists will also teach, including Robert Markus, an actor and singer from Ontario who played the lead role in Dear Evan Hansen for the Mirvish production.

Young campers will develop a range of musical theater skills such as improvisation and acting through song. They will also learn about the industry and what it takes to be in the spotlight.

Nonetheless, campers will also have time to relax and enjoy the natural surroundings, as well as participate in hiking, swimming, yoga, and gathering around a campfire.

“There are hundreds of children across British Columbia who share my lifelong passion for musical theatre,” Stevens said in a press release.

“Like me, they trained in studios week after week, but never had the opportunity to hone their skills in a dedicated musical theater night camp like Camp Cue.

“Camp Cue will give them the space to learn from some of the leading figures in our industry and allow them to fully express themselves, while experiencing the beauty that British Columbia has to offer at TELUS Wilderness Point.”

Spinola said the camp founders’ goal was to create a special home for young musical theater fans that was safe and inclusive.

As a professional choreographer, Spinola’s credits include productions of Mary Poppins and Cinderella (Theatre Under the Stars), both winners of the Ovation Awards for Outstanding Choreography; Mom Mia (Chemainus Theater Festival); 13 the musical (Bring tomorrow Co); Enron (United Players); Annie, legally blonde and Shrek (Align Entertainment); 9 to 5 (Capilano University); and rock of ages (Renegade Productions)

Spinola is also Co-Artistic Director and Resident Choreographer of the Raincity Theater Company.

As for Stevens, she studied at the Canadian College of the Performing Arts and completed the Broadway Teacher’s Workshop. She has been a musical theater teacher for over 20 years and has performed on stage in several shows including Theater Under the Stars’ Fat! and Revenge of a BlondeFighting Chance Productions’ Little Shop of Horrors and nonsense, APPLAUSE The unsinkable Molly Brown and RCMTs West Side Story.
